Birds of the World

Are you eligible for free access to Birds of the World?

Many of our partnership arrangements produce a great benefit – they make Birds of the World open access to certain constituents or countries (see the current list below). To take advantage of this free access, create an account or sign in with an existing Cornell Lab account username (e.g. your eBird username). When you see “Access provided by […..]” in the upper right part of the page, you know access has begun! This free access only applies to individuals while in the country named below. If you live in one of the countries below and already have a paid subscription to Birds of the World, be sure to cancel future renewals to avoid additional charges. You can cancel your paid subscription from the account management page.

Regions where BOW is open access include Latin America, Africa, and the OSME region of the MIddle East, Caucuses, and Central Asia.

Birds of the World is an open-access resource in the following 144 countries, thanks to partner collaborations. If you are trying to access from within one of these countries but cannot, it is because your IP address (104.23.197.166) suggests you are accessing from United States (US).
