As a full-time fashion editor and part-time travel writer, I’ve been to seven different countries (and counting) in the past year alone. But no matter how many times I visit, I always find myself wondering what to pack for a trip to Europe.
The itinerary, the transportation, the lodging—that’s the easiest part of international travel. It’s packing that’s the true test. The weather is unpredictable, the locals are impossibly cool, and each country has its own unique aesthetic. Factor in comfort and limited suitcase space, and packing can quickly begin to feel like a task you’d rather put off.
In fact, earlier this year, as I began prepping for a work trip to Denmark, I found myself once again researching this exact topic. But having landed in Copenhagen with my suitcase full, I can confidently say I’ve finally answered the age-old travel question of what to pack for a trip to Europe. These are the reliable vacation staples I always bring abroad.
What to pack for a Europe trip, at a glance
1. A carry-on that doubles as a purse
I recommend leaving your anti-theft crossbodies and overloaded backpacks at home; they’ll immediately peg you as a tourist. Instead, to achieve that local look, bring a stylish tote as your carry-on bag, then convert it into your travel bag once you land. A fun pattern, poppy color, or luxe material will go so far on your Euro travels.
Pairs well with: A cute bag charm
2. A pair of eye-catching sneakers
Comfortable sneakers are a must on any packing list, domestic or abroad. But this is your gentle reminder that you don’t have to leave your personal style at home. You’ll never catch me looking frumpy in vacation pics, so I always pack a pair of silver sneakers to nail both comfort and personal style. So far, I’ve worn my favorite sneakers in five different countries, and they haven’t failed me yet.
Pairs well with: A statement scrunchie
4. A plain ribbed tank top
Whether I’m on a freezing pebble beach in Iceland or sightseeing in France, there’s one thing I always bring in excess: tank tops. It’s best to bring at least one white and one black style for layering and easy styling; they can easily be dressed up or down. I like to work mine into my airport outfit, then wear it again throughout the week.
Pairs well with: An oversized button-down shirt
5. Comfy ballet flats
If you’re trying to keep your packing to a minimum, be sure to bring a pair of comfortable ballet flats. They take up less space than, say, boots. And let’s be honest, they look much chicer during the warmer months. When I’m really strapped for space—such as when I’m traveling with only a carry-on—I pack an oversized T-shirt to sleep in, then work it into my travel outfits later on. The two staples work so well together.
Pairs well with: A graphic tee
6. Easy black leggings
Obviously, classic leggings are a requirement for more outdoorsy destinations, but the return of tight-fitting bottoms has made them a metropolitan staple as well. Wear yours with breezy tops or plain tanks for an eclectic-cool vibe that feels authentically European. Plus, capri leggings are very much on trend throughout Europe right now, and they’ll get you through walking-heavy days with ease.
Pairs well with: Hiking sneakers
7. Stylish rain gear
As much as I hate to ruin an outfit with an ugly umbrella, even I have to admit that they’re an absolute necessity when traveling to the EU or the UK. Scattered showers are extremely common, so it’s best to always keep one on you—possibly in a cute color or pattern. I usually pack a plain black style so I don’t have to worry about outfit clashing, but you can bring whatever rain gear—jackets, waterproof bags, rubber clogs—that speaks most to you.
Pairs well with: A pendant necklace
2. A midweight layer
I’ve found—through thousands of miles of travel—that light jackets are the secret to Euro dressing. One thing you’ll notice abroad is that Europeans love layering, and both trench coats and leather jackets are staples in pretty much every city, from Paris to Madrid and Barcelona to Amsterdam. In terms of aesthetics, they give off an effortless cool-girl vibe. Functionality-wise, they’re unfailingly versatile and not too warm. Style yours casually for daytime, then dress it up for fancy dinners.
Pairs well with: A slinky midiskirt
