Further signs of Spring around Cottingham

5 May

3/4/22

Yellowhammer-Lawns Farm

5/4/22 Early Grey in the trap on Tuesday morning. Again an expected moth at this time of the year.

Early Grey moth

Finally had my first ‘migrant’ Blackcap this morning singing by the path north of Millbeck Wildlife Area.

6/4/22

I had a walk along Wood Lane early Wednesday evening. A few Blackcap had been heard by a friend on Saturday but not for me. I had a probable White Wagtail at Carr Farm and a pair of Wigeon.

White Wagtail-Carr Farm, Willerby

7/4/22 I had a male Blackcap in Millbeck Wildlife Area Thursday morning. In 2020/1 a flash at Lawns Farm had persisted well into the summer attracting Little Ringed Plover, Green Sandpiper and Yellow Wagtail but this year it is dry. However in recent days I’ve had decent flocks of Yellowhammer and Linnet. Today I had a Wheatear but disappeared when I went for my camera and as the weather was going off didn’t hang around. Had a few Redwing in Millbeck Wildlife Area, possibly migrants forced down by the storm I’d just walked through. These could be my last this end of the year.

9/4/22 After several inconclusive sightings in the Poplar/Wanlass Farm area finally on Saturday morning I had a good view of two Grey Partridge at Lawns Farm. No sign of the Wheatear and the Linnet and Yellowhammer flocks seemed to have dispersed.

10/4/22 With the return to more spring-like conditions on Sunday morning I had several Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone butterflies on Willerby Carr as well as my first Speckled Wood for 2022 on Wood Lane.

Early evening I walked Park Lane. I had a female Brambling briefly in the field opposite White House then saw it again in flight showing a white rump so I could exclude an odd female Chaffinch. Settled in to photographing the other more cooperative finches until I relocated it much further away but at least settled.

Further up I had the pair of Oystercatcher again feeding in the paddock opposite Swallow Croft. Likely to nest in the same area as 2020.

Successfully added the Burn Park Farm Little Owls to the April List.

11/4/22 Had my a Blackcap singing in Millbeck Wildlife Area on Monday morning and a good number of Tawny Mining Bees between there and Creykebeck.

12/4/22 Finally heard a Blackcap on the Willerby Carr Patch along Wood Lane early Tuesday evening.

13/4/22 Had my first Swallow of the year Wednesday morning appropriately at Swallow Croft, Park Lane. Also several Blackcap singing in the area.

14/4/22 Had my first decent moth trapping Thursday morning with Common Plume, Double-striped Pug, Light Brown Apple Moth, Early Thorn, Hebrew Character and Twenty-plumed Moth.

I had my first Willow Warbler this year singing on Middledyke Fields early afternoon. Pete Scot had Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat on Willerby Carr so looks like migrants are at last arriving in numbers. Willow Warbler used to be more common locally than Chiffchaff but in very recent years they have become rare in my “green birding” area.

Two Ruddy Shelduck were found on Priory Road early evening by Harry Witts. I was walking back from Creykebeck at the time but even if I’d been at home I couldn’t have got there before they flew west. Likely the same birds seen at Noddle Hill recently and subsequently at North Cave Wetlands YWT and on the Humber off Hull. Currently not on the official British List but they are being reassessed by the BOURC, however these two are likely not truly wild or from a Continental self-sustaining population. I have a recent blog post covering Ruddy Shelduck and other wildfowl also under consideration for addition to Cat A or C [wild or from an established feral population.] Had a look mid evening with Roy on Priory Road then Carr Farm, Willerby.

15/4/22 As others had already looked for the Ruddy Shelduck on Friday morning I decided to walk up to Lawns Farm.

18/4/22

19/4/22

20/4/22 Had my first Orange-tip Butterfly of the year near Creykebeck on Wednesday but too mobile to photograph.

21/4/22 Only one moth in the trap on Thursday morning, Shuttle-shaped Dart, but still on first fro the year.

Had my first House Martin of the year already at last years nest on Northgate..,

22/4/22 Latest update on Tophill Low NR access https://tophilllow.blogspot.com/2022/04/tophill-tours-limited-access-to-reserve.html?m=1&fbclid=IwAR26uAywHpzFb35rnSk2zqN8dwoZl7PZ6wg40nGg1g6ISCYjIVviCYU8aqY Basically no general access but booked escorted tours. I took one on Friday. Check here for the account.

25/4/22 A walked on Willerby Carr on Monday morning added three species to the patch year list with Lesser Whitethroat at Southwood Farm, Sedge Warbler singing by the flood prevention scheme and Swallow over Priory Road.

A pair of Oystercatcher on Priory Road on Monday were presumably the same as those at Carr Farm on Friday.

26/4/22

28/4/22

Brown-tail moth caterpillar-Millbeck Wildlife Area. A moth I have only trapped last year. [see here]. This caterpillar is considered a pest due to allergic reactions to its hairs [see here}.

30/4/22

Moth numbers remain low with nothing new recently but a Dor Beetle was trapped on the last day of April.

This post is a bit nebulous largely due to the lack of anything too interesting to provoke me to write anything earlier but by covering most of April I have covered the arrival of most migrant birds and the early butterflies. This spring has been slow with most migrants late but now most of the regular birds are now present in good numbers and starting to breed. What is missing so far is Swift, which I usually get by the end of April but my first in 2021 was very late on the 13th of May. Also not seen Yellow Wagtail, Little Ringed Plover or Green Sandpiper in the area which usually turn up either on passage or as with the first as a rare breeder.

10/3/22

Mistle Thrush singing on Station Road

Had my first Chiffchaff singing on Middledyke Fields Thursday evening. Early so wondered whether it might have overwintered but only got brief views so couldn’t tell if it was of the Siberian race.

11/3/22 Had my first Small Tortoiseshell butterfly of 2022 on Canongate this morning. Too mobile but needn’t have worried as I encountered several more on my walk. Also a male Brimstone but they rarely stop. I had a singing Chiffchaff in Oppy Wood but no sign of yesterday’s bird so likely a single mobile bird. Only one other local sighting so far at Burton Bushes. No sign of any Siskin.

The emergence of butterflies today was the signal to put the moth trap out for the first time this year catching a single Common Quaker. A species expected early spring.

13/3/22

Sparrowhawk with Woodpigeon-Middledyke Lane

14/3/22 Had at least two Chiffchaff on Willerby Carr this morning so now arriving in numbers. Also a good of Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone butterflies on the wing.

15/3/22

Common Green Shield Bug-Millbeck Lane

Chiffchaffs singing at Millbeck Wildlife Area on Tuesday morning and a friend had several on Snuff Mill Lane fields.

A flock of Whooper Swan flying north at dusk near Waterworks Cottages were my first in the village but had seen a flock over Haltemprice Farm a similar time last year that would have flown over Cottingham.

Had Beautiful Plume moth on the kitchen door this evening.

Little Owl-Burn Park Farm

A walked round Willerby Carr on Saturday evening added Red-legged Partridge at Southwood Farm, the only other record this year being along the approach road to Tophill Low NR and a Snipe over Carr Farm, again the only the records so far being at Tophill Low NR.

Red-legged Partridge off Abbots Walk

28/3/22 Having seen Canada goose occasionally on Northmoor Lane, just outside my Cottingham Patch,  a pair over Park Lane on Monday morning could finally be added to the patch year list.

Heard what I assume was my wintering Blackcap in better song by Church View early evening. However I have yet to encounter any migrants.

29/3/22 Walked round Willerby Carr early Tuesday evening. Nothing note worthy bird-wise although there were no Wigeon at Carr Farm but they might not yet have departed [still present on Saturday] properly. Pete Scot among others had seen a Water Vole in the drain along Swine Bank last week. I had seen a large swimming rodent on Saturday but couldn’t exclude Brown Rat which I had seen in the area before, however today after seeing some disturbance in the water managed to get up close to “Ratty” the Water Vole. My only other records in the area were one along Willerby Low Road and another in Oppy Road, both in this decade.

Water Vole-Swine Bank, Willerby

30/3/22 A walk up Park Lane on Wednesday evening added Red-legged Partridge to my Cottingham Patch year list.

31/3/22 The end of March we seems to have returned temporarily to winter. However Chiffchaffs were still singing Middledyke Fields/Oppy Wood

Despite an early arrival of Chiffchaff I haven’t encountered any further migrants but hopefully after this brief chill early April proper spring bird migration should start along with the emergence of more butterflies and moth and maybe early dragonflies. Told there were two Blackcap at Millbeck Wildlife Area this evening but didn’t connect.

Willerby Carrs, Cottingham and Baikal Teal at Tophill Low NR

12 Jan

8/1/22 Very wet Saturday morning but dried later. Eventually got out with the intention of at least checking Carr Farm pools, Willerby. However I was later than I’d realised but still gave myself time to check the paddock on Priory Road opposite Wood Lane. The usual gulls but also two male Pheasant which were my first this year and a distant Grey Heron which was the first in the village in 2022. Heading down Wood Lane and a few Redwing and a Fieldfare, which although not the first, were the first decent views this year.

Fieldfare-Wood Lane, Cottingham

The going was “soft” but not yet as bad as early last year. Reaching Carr Farm had c30 Teal and 5+ Redshank but maybe because of recent icy weather no Wigeon. Also a flock of c50 Canada Geese came from the flood scheme followed shortly by c100 Greylag Geese from the north. Somehow Wilbur had managed to fall in a ditch having gone the wrong way then presumably misjudging an attempted at a short cut. Light fading so back tracked and apart from a quick look at the fields north of Haltemprice Priory headed back towards the The Garth.

9/1/22 Sunday morning did our regular walk up Park Lane continuing to Burn Park Farm where a Little Owl was on a branch near the nest hole. Continued on to Poplar Farm where I had a few Yellowhammer, new for year, with more south of Creykebeck.

Yellowhammers near Creykebeck

Two pigs were loose at Lawns Farm but fortunately Wilbur was on his lead. Also had my first two Little Egret of the year near Waterworks Cottages.

A drake Baikal Teal was found at Hornsea Mere late morning by Dale Middleton. More on the Hornsea Mere blog. As a very rare bird I thought initially it might be the one seen intermittently at Greylake RSPB, Somerset but it that was still present. See my earlier blog on Baikal Teal and other rare wildfowl for more details but a previous Baikal Teal at Hornsea Mere and several other sites was considered an escape.

10/1/22 Monday morning had a two small flocks of Greylag Geese over the garden which were my first in the village this year. Walked up Northmoor Lane to New Ings. Had a female Reed Bunting and three Snipe, which were new for the year, as well as two Grey Heron and Kestrels but again for such a wilderness there was little birdlife.

Reed Bunting-New Ings, Cottingham

Walking back had a Little Egret in the drain from Caukeel Lane.

No sign of the Baikal Teal at Hornsea Mere today.

11/1/22 A good number of finches at KGV Rec Tuesday afternoon but couldn’t find anything better than Goldfinch, Greenfinch and Chaffinch. However also a few Redwing which were the first I’ve seen this side of the village this year ie in my Patchwork Challenge Cottingham patch. Also quite photogenic.

12/1/22 I am not happy with recent pictures and suspect the UV filter that I fitted before Christmas may be the cause. Arranged to go to Tophill Low NR with Roy early Wednesday afternoon hopefully to find the Baikal Teal but had time for a quick walk round KGV Rec where I hoped I would have much the same subjects as yesterday to make a comparison.

At Tophill Low NR we started by walking along Barmston Drain to view Watton NR. Partly frozen but plenty of Teal to look through. Had the pair of Pintail and I found a Water Rail on the island. Also a Little Egret in flight which we’d missed last week.

South Marsh East had been iced over last week and as often in winter pretty well deserted but this afternoon there were plenty of Teal to look through. Also several Redshank, two Snipe and a Shelduck, new for my site year list, as well as several Curlew flying off as we approached.

Spoke to Richard at the wardens centre and seemed we weren’t the only regulars to think about Baikal Teal. This didn’t put us off though and we set up in the “members hide” me checking the left side and Roy the right. It wasn’t look before Roy found it. After a bit of a panic I re-found it then set off to find Richard and inform anyone else in the car park. The hide soon filled up and although I had to keep re-locating it everyone left happy. We went round to Middle Hide with the hope of a closer view [I hadn’t yet got a picture]. However we couldn’t find it. Fortunately when a few who were either on site already or lived nearby arrived John Leason re-located it. Can’t comment on this myself but this bird may be an immature bird due to spatula shape so not the dubious 2019 Hornsea Mere bird.

Baikal Teal with Wigeon on D Res

Anyone intending on twitching it please follow on-site instructions. Richard posted “Our current policy has been masks are advisory within hides. However given the numbers of viewers we expect trying to see the bird in coming days if it remains, we ask that subsequently observers wear masks in the hides unless medically exempt whilst this bird is present. and certainly if hides are busy wear masks and try to distance”. Also be aware that on-site work means O res can’t be viewed and Watton NR only from Barmston Drain with some restricted viewing. Unless informed otherwise don’t arrive before 9am as the gate will be locked.

13/1/22 No sign of the Baikal Teal on D res this morning and later found to the south on Swine Moor viewable from the river bank off Weel Road, Beverley. Be aware there is very limited parking at the entrance to Corporation Farm. Photographs show it isn’t ringed and is fully winged thus not an obvious escape. However the 2019 wasn’t ringed but just “hung around too long”.

14/1/22 The Baikal Teal was back at Tophill Low NR on D res this afternoon.

15/1/22 Foggy day and the Baikal Teal wasn’t seen.

There was no news 16th-19th. On the last date Roy and I searched Tophill Low NR but apart from an indeterminate number of Pintail had nothing noteworthy not even any Red-crested Pochard although two Great Spotted Woodpeckers chasing over O Wood were an addition to the Patchwork Challenge list (T55). Then on the 20th the Baikal Teal was found again on D res late afternoon by Lee Johnson. Reported again on Friday mid morning after initial negative news and still present mid afternoon. Seen again on Saturday and Sunday although not reported until the afternoon. Best to read latest Tophill Blog before visiting for access restrictions.

25/1/22 On Swine Moor late afternoon.
