Habilitation in 1975 at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basel, Professor for Medical Biology until 2001. Starting in 1989, established the Research Station Petite Camargue Alsacienne and conducted extensive habitat management. Supervision of diploma theses and Ph.D. theses mainly on amphibians, mammals, insects and birds, as well as on conservation management.
Dr. Valentin Amrhein, director of the Research Station

Studies of Biology in Basel, Switzerland. Diploma thesis in 1999 supervised by Prof. Dr. Heinz Durrer and Prof. Dr. Stephen C. Stearns. Initiated the nightingale project in 1997, and is director of the Research Station since 1999. Ph.D. exam in February 2004. In 2005, spent a postdoctoral research year at the University of Oslo, Norway. Since 2006, Valentin is associated with the Institute of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Basel as a group leader. He teaches Ornithology, Behavioural Ecology and Statistics, and is consulting editor for Animal Behaviour. His main research interest is the behavioural ecology of vertebrates.
Tobias Roth, Ph.D. student

Studies of Biology in Basel (Switzerland) and Bergen (Norway). Diploma thesis 2004 at the Swiss Ornithological Institute, on the phenology of migrating birds in Mauritania, Western Africa, supervised by Prof. Dr. Bruno Bruderer and Dr. Felix Liechti. From 2005 to 2007, Tobias studied applied statistics at the ETH Zürich. He is half-time employed as a research assistant at Hintermann & Weber AG. For his Ph.D., he investigates the causes and consequences of male-biased adult sex ratios in songbirds, and particularly in nightingales. Supervised by Dr. Valentin Amrhein and Prof. Dr. Dieter Ebert.

Philipp Sprau, Ph.D. student

Studies of Biology in Munich and Berlin, Germany. Diploma thesis 2006 at the Freie University Berlin, supervised by Prof. Dr. Dietmar Todt and PD Dr. Henrike Hultsch, on distribution and performance of song repertoires in the common nightingale. Ph.D. student since 2007, supervised by Prof. Dr. Marc Naguib and Dr. Valentin Amrhein, at the University of Bielefeld and the Research Station Petite Camargue Alsacienne, on social cognition in communication networks of nightingales.

Katja Saggese, Master student

Studies the effects of winter feeding on territory defence in Norwegian great tits (Parus major). Supervised by Dr. Valentin Amrhein, Prof. Dr. Tore Slagsvold and Prof. Dr. Dieter Ebert.
Claudio Kugler, Master student

Studies dawn singing performance as a predictor of competitiveness in nightingales. Supervised by Dr. Valentin Amrhein and Prof. Dr. Dieter Ebert.
