A fire at the Tru by Hilton hotel in Naperville, possibly sparked by a lightning strike, caused about $8 million in damage, according to the Naperville Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the 1800 block of West Diehl Road about 11:20 p.m. Thursday on a 911 report of smoke inside the building and arrived to find fire coming from the building’s roof, a news release said.

The alarm was immediately upgraded to a general alarm and later to a second alarm, expanding the response to include additional engines, trucks and crew, the release said. Firefighters were able to fully extinguish the blaze by about 1 a.m.

All residents were safely evacuated from the building and no firefighters were injured, the release said.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted by the Naperville Police Department,  Naperville Electric Department, Nicor and the Bolingbrook, Wheaton, Warrenville, West Chicago, Aurora and Lisle-Woodridge fire departments and fire protection districts.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, fire officials told the Daily Herald it could have been started by a lightning strike. With one unit completely destroyed and extensive damage to the hotel’s upper floors, the building has been deemed uninhabitable, the release said.

Daily Herald reporter Jake Griffin contributed to this report.
