The official account for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

About us

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 and entered into force on 29 December 1993. It is the first global agreement to cover all aspects of biological diversity: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), based in Montreal, Canada, was established to support the goals of the Convention. Its primary functions are to organize meetings, prepare reports, assist member governments in the implementation of the various programmes of work, coordinate with other international organizations and collect and disseminate information.

  • Progress on biosafety depends on cooperation, expertise and continued support for countries. From 16–18 June 2026, the Liaison Group for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety held its fifteenth meeting at UN Biodiversity offices in Montreal. The Group provides expert advice to support the coordination and effective implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. At this meeting, experts contributed to the fifth assessment and review of the Protocol’s effectiveness, as well as the mid-term evaluation of its implementation plan and capacity-building action plan. Their input, together with the contribution of the Compliance Committee, will help inform discussions at the seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation in August 2026. The Group noted positive trends and progress in the implementation of the Protocol, while also recognizing that continued support and capacity-building efforts are still needed to help Parties move forward. #Biosafety #UNBiodiversity #ForNature
