Ring Ouzel Deacon Hill Pegsdon

Beds Birds annual April romp up Pegsdon today found very little on the migrant front, it was all very quiet until last knockings when we stumbled on 4 Ring Ouzel's in the scrub at the very top of Deacon Hill.

Many thanks to Jon Palmer for his lead and expertise on the day and the nice couple who pointed me in the right direction for this quick fleeting shot.

Osprey, Ouzel & Redstart all in a Day Out & About in Beds 11-04-2015

Started the day at Blows Downs and with the help of Mick Price got onto a rather distant Common Redstart in the Paddocks and a couple Ring Ouzel on the Chalk Pit Slope, I was just about to get a half decent close up shot of the Ouzel when it was flushed off the top of the bush in front of me by a low flying Red Kite so that was the end of that. I then got a call from Carolyn & Malcolm Hawkes re the possibility of an Osprey at Eversholt and dived down there late on 5 ish to try and get a look.

Again the bird was still on site but again quite distant but an Osprey in Beds all the same.

All in all a very good day all around, the photo's are not the best as everything was so distant but its not everyday you get Redstart, Ouzel & Osprey on the same day in Beds

Wintering Ring Ouzel

This Ring Ouzel has spent the winter around Dunstable.  It was first seen on 13th January on the edge of Kensworth Quarry, before being relocated in a Dunstable back garden by Sue Yannakopoulos on 8th and 9th February.  Sue commented:
"Snow was still on the ground those two days and he was obviously very hungry, he stayed most of the day and appeared next day from early morning until late afternoon.  We felt quite honoured to have had a visit."

This is only the second time a Ring Ouzel has wintered in Bedfordshire, after a bird spent almost two months around a Toddgton garden in 2011.

Many thanks to Sue for permission for us to use the photos above, and to the Ring Ouzel group for passing on Sue's original email.

Willington Ouzel

Went for a walk around Willington early morning looking for Nightingale and Turtle Doves among the summer visitors and was pleasantly surprised to find a female Ring Ouzel on the grass on the southern side of the settling lagoon feeding with two Mistle Thrushes. Made a change from finding them on the southern chalk slopes.

A Grand Day Out

Martin Palmer and I spend a very pleasant few hours at MVCP on Friday 20th April. We saw 7 Shelduck and an Arctic Tern on the Pillinge and a male Wheatear on the field between the Pillinge and the access track. After lunch at the visitors centre I returned to the Pillinge and as well as the birds already mentioned I saw a pair of Ring Ouzels on the meadow in-front of the centre. (MVCP Mega-tick for me!) I believe the female Ring Ouzel may have been seen shortly before I saw it by a couple of birders I met at the Pillinge. I think this is only the second record of Ring Ouzel for the MVCP/Stewartby Lake site
