HORNSEA MERE 2025

DARK-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE One on 4th November.

CANADA GOOSE A cold snap in January produced 250 on the 12th. The summering flock totalled 282 on 3rd July increasing during the late summer and autumn with 362 counted on 4th September.

BARNACLE GOOSE 38 overwintered up to 20th February. Recorded in every month except March and April. An influx along the coast on 13th October resulted in a count of 247. Otherwise autumn counts were similar to the early months until a flock of 60+ birds were seen on 31st December.

GREYLAG GOOSE 210 on 12th January. The year’s highest count was 490 on 8th October.

PINK-FOOTED GOOSE 650 on 25th January was the highest number recorded during the early months. 920 on 23rd September was the peak autumn total.

WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE The only sightings were 2 on 3rd February and 8 on 8th December.

MUTE SWAN Numbers were low during the early months building up during the spring with 223 recorded in July. 17 cygnets from 7 broods were reared. The maximum count was 254 on 13th November.

WHOOPER SWAN Recorded on 63 days with single figures on 7 days during the first 3 months. The first returning birds were 10 on 22nd September. This year’s low water levels provided good feeding opportunities resulting in birds remaining for prolonged periods and unusually high numbers.115 present on 22nd October gradually increasing to 165 on 2nd November.

EGYPTIAN GOOSE Recorded on 188 days with up to 5 adults seen. A pair bred with 6 young but failed to reach maturity.

SHELDUCK Noted on 204 dates with a maximum of 13 on 1st May. 1 pair bred and successfully reared 2 young.

MANDARIN Seen on 29 days and as usual most sightings coming in the summer months with up to 4 during June.

GARGANEY Recorded on 48 days. First sighting was of a drake on 19th March. In April a female on 16th, a male on 27th followed by a pair the following day. 3 including 2 drakes on 30th continued to be seen intermittently up to 19th May. 1 on 31st July and 14 days in August with 3 birds seen on 4 days between 15th-29th. In September recorded on 11 days with 5 seen on 2nd and 4 on 4th. A late bird was present between 5th-9th November.

SHOVELER Recorded on 235 days and in every month. Peak numbers occurred throughout August to October with a maximum count of 115 on 4th September.

GADWALL Numbers were low during the early months with an increase to 45 during the summer months. A brood of 7 well grown ducklings was occasionally seen during late July. Autumn saw an increase with 164 on 30th September and 157 on 28th October.

WIGEON 138 on 11th January was the highest count during the early months. Good numbers during the autumn with 760 recorded on 30th September.

MALLARD 480 occurred on 11th January during a cold period. Thereafter numbers were much lower until an increase in spring and summer. The highest count was 500+ on 20th August.

PINTAIL Seen on 111 days and in every month except May and July. September and October were the only months with double figures with 22 on 18th October the maximum.

TEAL 68 on January was the peak count during the early months. Higher numbers in late summer and autumn with 460 on 22nd November.

GREEN-WINGED TEAL A drake on 28th November (JCL). 8th Mere record.

RED-CRESTED POCHARD Two drakes on 5th November increasing to 9 on 9th, thereafter dwindling, with 1 remaining to the year end. First records since August 2022.

POCHARD 103 on 25th January was the highest count during the early months. Good numbers in autumn with 111 on 28th October increasing to 167 on 5th November. Numbers dropped off at the year end with December’s maximum only 7.

RING-NECKED DUCK A drake from 7th October to 6th November (on the latter date it was flushed by the first angling boat for several months and flew to Tophill Low amongst an exodus of waterfowl). (AD, RM et al).

TUFTED DUCK Highest counts were 240 on 23rd February and 295 on 6th November. A good breeding season with at least 6 broods.

SCAUP Recorded on 164 days with a minimum of 26 birds. The overwintering “flock” remained to early March and peaked at 8 between 2nd-4th January although at least 11 individuals were considered to have occurred with up to 6 females and 5 males seen. A female was present on 27th March and another from 9th-30th July. A drake was present on 19th August. Almost daily in October and November with 9 on 30th October and 13 on 5th November. 1 bird remained to the year end with December’s maximum being 6 on the 2nd.

HYBRID AYTHYA Drake Tufted Duck x Pochard during the early months and late autumn. A hybrid drake that was considered to be a Tufted Duck x Scaup in December from 4th-6th.

LESSER SCAUP A drake between 7th-9th April and again from 13th-17th April (JCL, DRM, MI et al). 5th record for the Mere.

VELVET SCOTER Two were briefly on the Mere on 22nd October before flying back towards the sea.

COMMON SCOTER Nine individuals recorded on 33 days, all singles except for 2 on 1st and 14th January.

LONG-TAILED DUCK An overwintering female stayed to 16th April.

GOLDENEYE 290 on 31st January increasing to 418 on 16th February. 216 on 26th December.

SMEW In February a drake from 3rd-4th, 22nd-23rd and again from 26th February-3rd March.

HOODED MERGANSER A ringed female on 26th June was a presumed escape.

GOOSANDER 23 sightings, including 7 on 11th January and 9 on 25th April.

RED-BREASTED MERGANSER A drake on 22nd December.

PHEASANT Resident.

RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE Recorded on 22 dates throughout the year with up to 7 including 5 young late summer/autumn.

SWIFT First of the year on 24th April, the last on 19th September. c1500 on 23rd June.

CUCKOO Ten records of singles between 14th April-13th June.

FERAL PIGEON Resident.

STOCK DOVE Resident. 12 on 25th January.

WOOD PIGEON Resident. 1100 on 2nd January.

COLLARED DOVE Resident in small numbers in residential areas bordering the Mere.

WATER RAIL Resident.

MOORHEN Resident. 42 on 12th August.

COOT The only month during the first 6 to have more than 26 birds was May with 64 on 21st. An increase in July with 276 on 29th, building throughout the late summer and autumn to 830 on 13th November.

LITTLE GREBE Recorded on 69 days, 8 on 22nd and 30th July.

RED-NECKED GREBE A juvenile between 3rd-26th August and what was considered the same bird again on 9th September. First record since November 2021 (MRad, JCL et al).

GREAT CRESTED GREBE A better year with sightings on 213 days and recorded almost daily during late summer and autumn. Double figures attained occasionally during the autumn with 15 on 9th October.

SLAVONIAN GREBE One between 16th-28th November (MI, JCL et al).

BLACK-NECKED GREBE In April singles on 13th and 16th-17th.

OYSTERCATCHER Seen on 178 days. First returning bird was on 13th February. 10 on 10th May.

AVOCET Present on 14 days and in each month between March-August. 6 on 26th July and 4 on 8th August.

GREY PLOVER Recorded on 18 days between 30th May-11th October, all singles except for 2 on 12th June.

GOLDEN PLOVER Noted on 17 days with a maximum count of 440 on 17th March. 250 on 20th October.

RINGED PLOVER Recorded on 67 days with a maximum of 28 on 12th August.

LITTLE RINGED PLOVER First sighting on 20th May and recorded on 75 days. One pair bred rearing a single chick. Regular sightings of juveniles during the summer suggested at other locally reared birds. Notable counts of 7 on 4th July and in August with 7 on 15th and 6 on 16th. Last seen 23rd September.

LAPWING Recorded on 195 days, maximum counts of 170 on 29th September and 135 on 1st October.

WHIMBREL Recorded on 40 days between 25th April-7th September. Highest count was 10 on 2nd May.

CURLEW Recorded on 63 days with a high of 21 on 8th July.

BLACK-TAILED GODWIT Recorded on 58 days between 30th April – 20th December. Maximum counts of 24 on 29th June and 22 on 15th July.

JACK SNIPE One on Kirkholme Point on 28th September. Another at Wassand on 11th October.

WOODCOCK Up to 3 seen on 18 days during the winter months.

SNIPE Recorded on 82 days with 23 on 29th August.

COMMON SANDPIPER Seen on 115 days between 13th April-8th October with peak counts of 13 on 5th May, 27 on 21st July and 15 on 7th September.

GREEN SANDPIPER Recorded on 22 days between 29th March and 21st October. All singles except for 2 on 16th July and 6th September.

WOOD SANDPIPER Singles 30th April, 18th May, 5th and 21st July. Recorded on 19 days in August with 2 recorded on 4 days between 9th and 15th.

REDSHANK Recorded on 115 days with 67 on 7th July.

SPOTTED REDSHANK One on 8th April. In June 1 on 14th and 2 on 21st-22nd. Singles 8th July and 18th September.

GREENSHANK Recorded on 73 days between 6th April-28th September. 3 on 14th and 26th July. Daily in August with 4 on 26th August and 2nd September.

TURNSTONE 12 records between 23rd July-23rd October. 2 on 7th September.

KNOT 30 sightings. Four on 30th April. Recorded on 14 days in July with 7 on 23rd. 10 on 4th September.

RUFF After only 2 records of singles last year, late summer and early autumn produced 74 days of sightings due to the lower water levels. First on 4th May, daily in August and September with 54 on 22nd August. Latest sighting was on 14th October.

CURLEW SANDPIPER Seen on 14 days In September with 4 on 11th, 3 on 13th & 14th. Final sighting on 3rd October.

SANDERLING One on 21st July.

DUNLIN Recorded on 125 days with 25 on 29th July, 38 on 22nd August and 31 on 27th September.

LITTLE STINT Recorded on 12 days, 1 on 13th June, 2 25th-28th August and on 8 days in September with 5 on 9th and 3 on 4 days 8th-12th.

WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER An adult on 31st August-1st September (DRM, MRob, MRad, JCL, LI ) The first Mere record.

PECTORAL SANDPIPER One on 17th-18th September (DRM, JCL, MRad)

CASPIAN TERN One briefly on a buoy off Kirkholme Point on 8th July before flying west (MI).

BLACK TERN Three juveniles on 12th September.

ARCTIC TERN In May 2 on 5th and 1 on 13th. In July singles on 20th, 27th and 31st. Singles on 4th and 10th August with 2 on 13th. 1 on 21st September.

COMMON TERN First of the year was on 17th April with the last bird recorded on 17th October. Highest counts were 45+ on 23rd July and 44 on 12th August.

SANDWICH TERN Recorded on 9 Days, 7 of which were in July. Maximum count of 7 on 18th July.

LITTLE GULL Seen on 147 days. First of the year wasn’t until 8th April with the final sighting on 8th November. Daily during May through to mid September. Early morning counts of 150 on 12th July, 140 on 10th August.

KITTIWAKE During May 2 on 4th with 1 the following day. Singles on 12th and 20th. Singles on 19th September and 15th November.

SABINE’S Gull An adult on 14th July was the 2nd Mere record following a juvenile on 10th September 1990 (JCL, MRad).

BONAPARTE’S GULL An Adult on 20th April. First Mere record (JCL. DB, TI, DGH et al).

BLACK-HEADED GULL Present throughout the year.

MEDITERRANEAN GULL Scarce, being recorded on only 29 days. Mostly singles, 3 on 28th June the maximum.

COMMON GULL Recorded throughout the year with 375 on 12th December.

CASPIAN GULL Seen on 42 days between 18th July-7th November. Mostly singles with 2 recorded on 10 days. A 3rd cy on 21st October was ringed on 9th June 2023 at Hiddensee in Germany.

HERRING GULL Present throughout the year. 600+ on 8th April.

YELLOW-LEGGED GULL Recorded on 11 days July through to September. Adults on 2nd and 8th July otherwise juveniles, with the final bird on 16th September.

GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL 110+ on 12th December.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL First of the year on 7th February. The maximum recorded was 15 on 17th August. Final record on 18th October.

GREAT NORTHERN DIVER One present from 15th November to 5th December.

FULMAR The year’s only record was on 6th September.

MANX SHEARWATER The Mere’s first record occurred 13th-14th June (JCL et al).

GANNET A juvenile on 10th October (MT)

CORMORANT Roost counts were low during the early months with a high of 75 on 21st February. 202 were counted on 11th August.

GLOSSY IBIS One on 7th August (JCL, DRM). 7 arrived on the evening of 26th August and departed the following morning (JCL, GG et al). 1 on 30th September (DRM, MRob). 3 6th-9th October with 4 on 8th. (MRob, GG, SM, CC et al). 1 from 11th-23rd October (MRob et al).

SPOONBILL In May 3 on 11th, 6 south on 14th and 1 on 30th. Singles in June on 3rd and 15th.

BITTERN Recorded on 32 days during 8 months, mainly of singles.

CATTLE EGRET Singles in July on 19th and 25th. 1 on 30th August. 11 on 25th December was a record count for the Mere surpassing a flock of 7 seen in 2023 (GG et al).

GREY HERON Noted on 246 days with a maximum of 10 on 21st July.

GREAT WHITE EGRET Seen on 135 days. Recorded on all but 13 days in the 4 months July through to October. Up to 4 seen regularly during this period with higher counts of 7 on 26th September, 6 the following day and 5 on 28th.

LITTLE EGRET Recorded on 208 days, peaking at 27 on 22nd July and 28 on 29th July. The latter the highest count at the Mere. During July and August 43 days recorded double figure counts.

OSPREY Singles on 25th May and 1st June (the latter a male ringed as a chick at Kielder Forest in 2023). Another ringed bird flew west on 8th August. It was ringed at the nest on 11th July 2023 at Balgavies Loch, Angus. In September singles on 4th and 7th, 2 on 12th with 1 staying to roost and present the following day. Further singles on 16th and 19th.

SPARROWHAWK Resident.

MARSH HARRIER Seen throughout the year. A juvenile ringed and wing tagged in Norfolk on 7th July was present on 15th September.

RED KITE Sightings of 1-2 on 19 days with 3 on 16th June.

WHITE-TAILED EAGLE An immature (G602) was present on 30th-31st May after roosting at Mappleton. (DRM, JCL, MRad et al). A second IOW released bird was present between 7th-9th September (DRM et al).

BUZZARD Resident.

BARN OWL Sightings occasionally at both the east and west ends of the area.

SHORT-EARED OWL Singles on 13th March and 5th May.

TAWNY OWL Resident.

KINGFISHER Recorded occasionally throughout the year.

GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER Resident.

GREEN WOODPECKER One-two recorded in every month except June and July.

KESTREL Resident.

MERLIN One on 22nd August.

HOBBY Recorded between 24th April-10th October on 55 days. Scarcer than in previous years with no more than 4 recorded in a day.

PEREGRINE Absent in the first 3 months and recorded on only 26 days throughout the year. 3 on 2nd December.

JAY Resident.

MAGPIE Resident. 19 on 2nd September.

JACKDAW Resident. 140 on 7th January.

ROOK Resident. 71 on 8th January.

CARRION CROW Resident. 60+ on 11th January.

RAVEN One on 7th November.

COAL TIT Resident.

BLUE TIT Resident.

GREAT TIT Resident.

BEARDED TIT Resident. 11 on 21st October.

SKYLARK Present all year. 63 south on 21st October.

SAND MARTIN Recorded between 25th March-19th September. Peak counts of 600 on 23rd June and 500 on 2nd July.

SWALLOW Recorded between 4th April and 9th November. Highest count was c500 on 2nd August.

HOUSE MARTIN Recorded between 15th April-4th October. c150 on 21st August.

CETTI’S WARBLER Resident. 14+ singing males in the spring.

LONG-TAILED TIT Resident. 30+ 10th August.

YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER Two on 17th and 22nd October.

WILLOW WARBLER Recorded between 6th April-14th September. 16+ 28th August.

CHIFFCHAFF One on 22nd January. Highest count was 23 on 3rd April. Several at the year end with 4 on 29th December.

GREAT REED WARBLER A male in song for 51 days between 10th May-29th June (JCL, DRM, TI, MI et al) becoming Yorkshire’s longest staying record and the 2nd Mere sighting following the county’s first between 29th May-19th June 1971.

SEDGE WARBLER First sighting on 8th April.

REED WARBLER First recorded on 15th April.

GRASSHOPPER WARBLER Two singing birds were located during April and May.

BLACKCAP First recorded on 28th March. 18 on 26th April.

LESSER WHITETHROAT First of the year was on 15th April.

WHITETHROAT First on 17th April.

GOLDCREST Resident.

WREN Resident. 19 counted on 16th June.

NUTHATCH Recorded on 15 days between January-August.

TREECREEPER Resident.

STARLING Peak counts in late autumn with c20,000 on 29th October.

SONG THRUSH Resident.

MISTLE THRUSH Scarce resident.

REDWING Small numbers during the winter and migration periods.

BLACKBIRD Resident.

FIELDFARE 820 flew west on 17th October.

SPOTTED FLYCATCHER One pair bred.

ROBIN Resident. 41 on 31st March.

PIED FLYCATCHER Singles on 19th May, 25th and 29th August and in September on 1st and 19th.

BLACK REDSTART Singles on 9th April and 16th November.

WHINCHAT Singles on 10th and 22nd May. 6 days in August, 4 days in September with the final sighting on 2nd October. Highest count was 3 on 27th August.

STONECHAT Recorded on 28 days with 5 on 6th October.

WHEATEAR Only records were of singles on 14th and 19th April and 27th August.

TREE SPARROW Scarce now at the Mere and infrequently recorded. 5 on 15th August was the only record that exceeded 2.

DUNNOCK Resident.

YELLOW WAGTAIL Recorded on 21 days between 10th April-4th September. Most frequently in August with 5 on 11th and 19th.

GREY WAGTAIL Seen on 33 days with 5 on 18th August.

PIED WAGTAIL Resident.

WHITE WAGTAIL Seen on 29th March and 6 days in April with 2 on 19th.

MEADOW PIPIT Seen throughout the year. 52 on 12th September, 34 on 22nd December.

ROCK PIPIT Recorded on 3 days in October with 2 on 16th.

“SCANDINAVIAN” ROCK PIPIT One on 28th and 29th March.

CHAFFINCH Resident.

BRAMBLING Only recorded on 4 days in October in low single figures.

BULLFINCH Resident.

GREENFINCH Resident in small numbers.

LINNET The highest count of 298 was on 3rd February.

REDPOLL Only recorded on 12 days, mainly in October with 15 on 22nd.

COMMON CROSSBILL One on 29th May. In October 2 on 9th, 10 on 17th and 4 on 18th.

GOLDFINCH Resident. Good numbers in autumn with a maximum count of 260 on 27th September.

SISKIN Regular in the winter months. Highest counts were 40 on 1st January and 50 on 16th November.

CORN BUNTING One on 28th February and 1 singing on 7th May.

YELLOWHAMMER Resident in small numbers.

REED BUNTING Resident.

HORNSEA SEAWATCHING AND SURROUNDING AREA SIGHTINGS

DARK-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE Highest count was 168 (19 north, 149 south) on 15th November. 1 in a field north of the Mere on 21st December and presumably the same at Little Hatfield on 28th December.

BARNACLE GOOSE 105 (50 north, 55 south) on 13th October. Part of a large movement along the coast with 247 congregating the same day at the Mere.

TUNDRA BEAN GOOSE Two on Bewholme Lane north of Honeysuckle Farm on 20th December and 2 at Little Hatfield on 28th December were probably the same birds (GG, MI, JCL, DRM).

PINK-FOOTED GOOSE A feeding flock in fields north of the Mere during December peaked on 22nd with c1530.

WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE Two at Bewholme on 28th January. 1 in fields north of the Mere on 14th December with 6 in the same area 21st-22nd. 2 at Little Hatfield on 29th December.

SHELDUCK 17 south 30th June.

GARGANEY Two north 26th July, 2 in off the sea on 9th August.

TEAL 1141 during a seawatch on 7th September.

SCAUP Singles over the sea on 19th August, 6th October and 13th October.

EIDER Highest count recorded this year was 30 north on 15th October.

VELVET SCOTER In October recorded on 5 days with 4 on 15th and 5 on 18th. Seen on 3 November days including 4 on 14th. 2 flew north off Atwick on 18th December.

COMMON SCOTER Highest count for the year was 267 on 18th August.

LONG-TAILED DUCK All sightings in October with singles south on 23rd and north on 25th, 2 on 26th and 1 north on 27th.

RED-BREASTED MERGANSER Recorded on 8 dates over the sea with 9 north on 18th October.

GREY PARTRIDGE Up to 6 at North Cliff, 11 near Brockholme Farm on 11th December.

PALLID SWIFT One photographed as it flew south at Cowden on 9th November (MRob).

RED-NECKED GREBE One flew north on 21st August.

PURPLE SANDPIPER One regularly in the early months up to 7th April with 2 on 13th March. 1 on the seafront from 22nd September. 18 flew north on 15th October.

LITTLE TERN In August 8 north on 2nd and 1 on 23rd.

BLACK TERN Seawatch sightings during August were 5 on 18th and 1 on 20th. 3 on 3rd September and 1 on 3rd October.

COMMON TERN 1244 on 8th August.

ROSEATE TERN Singles on 18th August and 1st September.

SABINE’S GULL The only seawatch record was of an adult south on 6th September (DGH).

MEDITERRANEAN GULL Highest day totals were 4 on 30th September and 4 25th October.

GLAUCOUS GULL An adult flew south on 27th October (DRM, JCL, DGH).

CASPIAN GULL Several sightings on the seafront August/September.

GREAT SKUA Recorded on 12 days, maximum counts of 7 on 21st September and 7 on 14th November.

POMARINE SKUA Singles recorded in August on 1st, 2nd, 12th, 19th and 23rd. In September singles on 4th, 6th & 30th. October sightings of 1 on 19th and 12 (5 north, 7 south) on 23rd. In November 2 north on 12th and 3 north on 14th.

ARCTIC SKUA Recorded on 25 days with 15 on 21st September.

LONG-TAILED SKUA Singles on 19th August, 21st & 26th September and 13th October.

LITTLE AUK One on 29th October and 2 on 15th November.

BLACK GUILLEMOT Singles north on 23rd August (DGH) and south on 27th October (JCL, DGH, DRM).

RED-THROATED DIVER Highest count made was 162 on 27th January.

BLACK-THROATED DIVER One on the sea 28th July, 1 south 8th October, 1 north on 19th October, 1 south 31st October and 1 north on 4th November.

GREAT NORTHERN DIVER Recorded on 21 days over the sea with 3 north 25th October, 3 south on 1st November and 4 on 14th November.

STORM PETREL One north on 21st September (DRM, JCL).

LEACH’S PETREL Three north on 14th November (DGH, JCL, GCT).

GREAT SHEARWATER One north 21st August (DRM, JCL, MRad, JB).

SOOTY SHEARWATER In August singles on 16th and 19th, 3 on 20th and 1 on 21st. Singles on 7th September and 17th November.

MANX SHEARWATER 44 on 8th July was the highest count made.

SHAG Three north on 21st September.

GLOSSY IBIS Seven tracked south earlier along the coast passed over North Cliff before heading to roost at the Mere on 26th August (DGH, SW).

OSPREY One flew west over Great Hatfield on 7th June. Singles seen in off then seen again at the Mere on 8th August and 7th September.

HEN HARRIER A ringtail in off the sea on 16th February (JCooper), 1 north over the sea 16th October (DGH).

SHORT-EARED OWL Singles at Rolston 27th May, North Cliff 12th September, off the sea 5th October, North Cliff 13th October, off the sea 19th and 25th October and 4th November.

MERLIN Singles at North Cliff 18th and 29th January and 1 over the sea on 24th October.

YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER One North Cliff 17th-19th October.

RING OUZEL One at Rolston on 21st October.

WHITE-SPOTTED BLUETHROAT A male at North Cliff 24-25th March was the first record of Bluethroat at Hornsea (J Cooper, MR, DRM, DGH, SW, JCL et al).

PIED FLYCATCHER One Rolston 19th August.

REDSTART One at Rolston 22nd October.

BLACK REDSTART One off Atwick road on 15th November.

TREE SPARROW A good count for the area in recent times was c40 at North Cliff on 1st August.

TWITE One south at North Cliff on 12th October.

SNOW BUNTING Two at North Cliff 12th January, 1 over the seafront on 14th February. 4 west of Mappleton on 16th November. 6 Hornsea South Cliffs on 18th December with 7 there on 20th. 7 seen in a seawatch the same morning were likely the same birds.

CORN BUNTING Two at North Cliff on 8th April. 2 east of Seaton late May to early June.
