HORNSEA MERE 2024
DARK-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE Singles on 1st April and 9th November.
CANADA GOOSE 152 on 19th January during a cold spell, thereafter numbers were low until the summering/breeding birds returned with 198 counted on 18th June. The year’s highest count of 225 came on 22nd September.
BARNACLE GOOSE Recorded in every month except February and March. 43 including several ringed birds from Scorton were present between 18th-23rd January. The returning autumn flock numbered 38 with an increase to 61 on 30th November.
GREYLAG GOOSE Cold weather brought an arrival of 248 on 19th January although they soon departed as the temperature returned to normal. 660 on 3rd October was the highest count of the year.
PINK-FOOTED GOOSE Notable morning counts of feeding flocks moving north from the Humber roost included 470 on 28th January and 660 on 4th February. In September the first autumn returning individuals were on the 11th with the year’s highest count of 8080 recorded on the 29th.
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE Sightings of a 1w bird(s) on 4th January, 25th February and on 19 days between 21st March and 21st May. In November 2 on 10th and 1 on 12th. One present on 24th and 28th December.
MUTE SWAN Both the wintering and summer moult populations were greatly reduced. Most counts during the early months were of single figures although 17 were recorded on 2 days in February. Numbers swelled to 63 on 19th March before halving again. Summering birds increased in May but only peaked at 104 on 13th August.
WHOOPER SWAN Recorded on 56 days (61 days for the greater Hornsea area). Scarce as usual in the early months with January sightings of 6 on 11th and 5 on the 19th. Autumn migration began on 29th September with 4. Peak counts were during October with 124 south on 11th, 63 south on 26th (150 including birds following the coast) and 96 on 28th (120 including sightings over the sea).
EGYPTIAN GOOSE Seen on 28 days with 1 on 28th March and again 25th-30th April. 3 occurred on 21st January and 4 were present on 20th August. 2 intermittently from 19th October to the year end.
SHELDUCK Noted on 170 dates including 10 on 15th April. A pair with a duckling in early July for a couple of days was noteworthy, although the subsequent lack of sightings thereafter suggest it didn’t survive.
MANDARIN Seen on 31 days, 18 of them in July. Sightings of more than 2 individuals were 4 on 16th February, 3 on 18th March, 3 on 4th April and 3 on 11th July. Last seen on 10th November.
GARGANEY A pair on 17th April and a drake on 30th. In May a drake between 5th-8th, and a pair on 27th. In June singles on 3rd and 30th. July sightings were 1 on 8th and 2 on 28th. Singles on 3 days in August with the final bird on 29th.
SHOVELER Recorded on 241 days. Spring passage peaked on 10th April with 35. A good autumn passage with 13 days of 100+ counts made, the most notable being 171 on 20th September, 236 on 28th September and 195 on 3rd October.
GADWALL The onset of cold weather in January produced a small influx of 67 on 18th, although outside this period only small numbers were present, often in low single figures or not present at all. A brood of 3 ducklings was seen several times during the summer. Autumn and early winter numbers were again low, 34 during November’s cold spell on 18th was comfortably the highest.
WIGEON Counts in the early months were low with just 8 100+ totals that occurred during the cold January weather and peaking at 540 on 18th. 8 counts of 100+ were made in December with 370 on the 2nd and 15th.
AMERICAN WIGEON A drake on 18th March was the 2nd Mere record following a drake on 19th October 2020. (JCL,MI,MRob,LI et al)
MALLARD An influx of 460 on 19th January was the highest of the early months. As with Wigeon the only 3 figure counts in this period were during the January cold spell. Cold temperatures in November again were reflected in the year’s peak of 480 on 21st.
PINTAIL Seen on 46 days. 8 on 17th September was the maximum count.
TEAL 121 on 18th January was the peak count during the early months. An influx of 1530 on the morning of 29th August was noteworthy. 340 were present on 28th November.
POCHARD The maximum during the early months was 72 on 21st January. 15 on 29th June was a typical date for returning non breeding birds. 112 were counted on the 27th and 29th November.
RING-NECKED DUCK A 1w drake between 2nd and 7th December (JCL, DGH, SW, DRM et al). The 4th consecutive year for the species.
HYBRID POCHARD X TUFTED DUCK A recurring individual between 1st April-4th May.
TUFTED DUCK In 2023 a typical mid December total of 380 on the 16th was swiftly followed with numbers halving by the year end. The theme continued into the first 5 days of 2024 which saw an average of 183, thereafter reducing to 73 on the 6th January and only 21 by the 8th. A brief recovery in the 3rd week of the month with 2 days seeing 3 figures, peaking at 203 on the 21st, followed by numbers plummeting again to just 33 the following day. 51 days in the first 3 months recording 30 birds or less with 15 days during this period not attaining double figures, even getting down to a single remaining bird. An increase during spring passage with 121 seen on 13th April. 2 broods were raised although one brood was heavily predated. The year’s highest count was 415 on 26th November then declined sharply to a low of 27 on 15th December.
SCAUP Recorded on 103 days. Up to 4 wintering birds remained into January. Drakes were present on 24th March, and between 10th-14th July. 4 arrived on 24th September followed by regular sightings during October, peaking at 3 mid month. Recorded almost daily during November and December with 9 on 14th November and 9 again between 19th and 25th December.
COMMON SCOTER Seen on 43 days and during 8 months. Highest count was 11 on 3rd November.
LONG-TAILED DUCK A female from 15th January to 9th February and a drake between 20th-30th April. A drake between 19th May-5th June. A female was present from 21st November to the year end.
GOLDENEYE The only species of waterfowl that remained in typical numbers during the early months with 3 days in late January with 400+ counts, 414 being the highest on 31st. 12 counts made of 300+ in February with 391 on 13th. March’s highest count was 323 on the 6th. The highest count at the year end was 251 on 26th November.
SMEW Redhead sightings on 7th and 31st January, between 8th-10th February and in March on the 9th and from 14th-16th. A drake in December between 3rd-5th.
GOOSANDER 24 sightings including 6 on 22nd July and 4th December.
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER A female on 18th March, 2 on 25th April and 1 on 9th November.
GREY PARTRIDGE 1 heard 19th July.

RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE 1 14th May.
SWIFT First of the year was seen on 23rd April. c700 on 26th May, c1800 on 28th June, c1100 on 14th July. Last seen on 30th August.
SWIFT sp. A Swift seen briefly on 31st March was either an exceptionally early Common or a Pallid (MI).
CUCKOO Recorded on 14 days between 1st May to 6th July.
FERAL PIGEON Resident.
STOCK DOVE Resident. 16 on 18th January.
WOOD PIGEON Resident. 900+ on 14th December.
COLLARED DOVE Resident.
WATER RAIL Resident.
MOORHEN Resident. c30 on 28th August.
COOT The maximum during the early months was 137 on 21st January. The last 3 figure count in this period was 106 on 10th February after which numbers declined rapidly. By March single figure counts were frequently recorded and from 30th March until 29th June no double figures count were reached. A post breeding influx in July and August produced the year’s highest count of 139 on 17th August, thereafter numbers started to drop and the species was only seen on 15 days during December. A Coot found freshly dead at Stream Dyke on 17th March had been rung at Chorlton Water Park, Manchester on 28th January 2022.
CRANE 2 flew north on 29th April (JCL).
LITTLE GREBE Recorded on 59 days, typically 1-4 although 15 were seen on 16th October.
GREAT CRESTED GREBE Becoming scarcer each year being recorded on only 112 days, mainly in late summer and early autumn. Up to 4 on 8 days between 14th August-1st September.
SLAVONIAN GREBE Singles on 27th March and 9th September. One 10th-11th November was replaced by a different bird on the 13th.
BLACK-NECKED GREBE 2 between 26th-29th August and singles in September on 15th and 29th. In November recorded on 11th, 16th-20th and from 28th-3rd December.
OYSTERCATCHER Recorded between 9th February-8th September, peaking at 8 on 26th June.
AVOCET 2 on 9th June, in July 1 on 11th, 4 on 26th and singles on 29th and 30th. 1 on 12th August.
LAPWING 56 on 16th February was the year’s maximum count.
GOLDEN PLOVER A maximum count of c110 on 30th March.
GREY PLOVER Singles on 7th and 12th August, 27th October and 8th November.
RINGED PLOVER Recorded on 38 days including 9 south on 10th May.
WHIMBREL Recorded on 30 days between 21st April and 30th August. Highest day count was 5 on 6th May.
CURLEW Recorded on 71 days with a high of 17 on 24th June.
BAR-TAILED GODWIT Singles on 15th April and 25th July.
BLACK-TAILED GODWIT Recorded on 17 days between 18th April and 1st September. Maximum count of 15 on 19th August.
TURNSTONE 2 west on 13th August.
KNOT 1 on 11th May, 2 on 23rd July and singles on 31st August and 25th September.
RUFF Singles on 12th August and 1st September were the only records in a very poor year for waders at the Mere.
DUNLIN Recorded on 49 days. Highest count of 7 on 21st August.
WOODCOCK Seen on 32 dates. 7 noted on 11th January and 6 on 5th February.
SNIPE 15 on 8th January was the year’s maximum.
COMMON SANDPIPER Seen on 85 days between 7th April-24th September. The peak count was 14 on 29th June.
GREEN SANDPIPER The only record of a single on 7th May highlights the dearth of waders due to this year’s high water levels.
REDSHANK Recorded on 68 days with 19 on 28th August the highest count.
GREENSHANK Recorded on 24 days between 7th May-16th September. 3 on 31st August was the highest day total.
LITTLE TERN A single bird flew east on 18th June.
BLACK TERN 3 on 11th May had earlier flown east from Tophill Low. Juveniles on 21 days in August between 6th and 28th with 4 on 21st, 22nd and 28th. 2 on 9th and 11th September with the final sighting of the year of a single on 13th.
ARCTIC TERN 1 on 19th June and on 6 days in July including 4 on 1st.
COMMON TERN First 2 were seen on 29th April and the final sighting was on 11th September. The highest count was 16 on 6th August.
SANDWICH TERN Seen on 14 days including 10 dates in July. The most notable were 6 on 15th May, 4 on both 8th and 23rd July and 3 on 6th August.
KITTIWAKE 4 adults east on 14th May, 1 on 6th June.
BLACK-HEADED GULL Seen in all months, c1000 on 29th June was the highest recorded.
LITTLE GULL Recorded on 131 days and in every month except April, November and December.. 4000 on 18th July and in August 5000 on 4th and 4900 on 13th. Morning numbers are typically fewer than in the evenings, the best being 2860 on 2nd August. Swedish colour ringed birds were blue PY and red G34 (the latter fitted with a tracking device) from 30th July into early August.
MEDITERRANEAN GULL Only recorded on 23 dates. 4 on 24th June.
COMMON GULL Recorded throughout the year with a high of 820 on 23rd March.
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL 140+ on 7th December was the year’s maximum count.
ICELAND GULL A 2cy on 28th January (PaulM, DM, CB et al). A 3cy on 4th and 15th March (JCL).
HERRING GULL Present throughout the year with c420 on 17th January.
CASPIAN GULL Recorded on 29 days between 26th July-20th September with sightings on 20 dates in August. 3 seen on 8th, 13th, 17th and 29th of August. All juveniles except for a 2cy on 29th August.
YELLOW-LEGGED GULL Recorded on 7 days. A 1st winter on 14th January and juveniles in August on 2nd, 9th, 13th, 14th, 17th and 29th.
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL First of the year on 7th February, final 2 birds seen on 6th December. 19 on 12th August.
FULMAR In June singles on the 1st and 9th.
CORMORANT January roost counts were low, usually 30-50 birds until an increase at the end of the month with 144 on 27th. 184 roosted on 21st February and 179 on 8th November but no 3 figure counts in December.
SHAG 1 on 21st June.
SPOONBILL In April singles on 1st, 8th, 29th and 30th. May records were 2 on 17th and 6 north on 23rd. In June singles on 11th, 21st and 28th June. 5 south on 17th July.
BITTERN 13 sightings with nearly half of these seen during November and December.
CATTLE EGRET 1 on 5th April, 2 north on 14th May and 1 south on 15th June (DRM, LB, MRad, JCox).
GREY HERON Present throughout the year with 6 on 3rd January and 24th March. 10 on 29th August.
GREAT WHITE EGRET Seen on 23 days. Notable counts were 3 on 17th March and 4 on 29th September. 7 on 18th September was a site record.
LITTLE EGRET Fewer sightings, recorded on 108 days peaking at 6 on 22nd July.
OSPREY Singles on 29th May, 4th June, 20th July, 8th August and 18th September.
HONEY BUZZARD 1 south on 29th September (DRM).
SPARROWHAWK Resident. 4 on 6th November.
MARSH HARRIER Resident. 9 on 22nd December.
HEN HARRIER A ringtail on 29th April (DRM, JCL).
MONTAGU’S HARRIER A female flew north on 5th May (DRM). 3 previous sightings have occurred: 10th October 1976, 16th September 1979 and 5th May 1997.
RED KITE Sightings of 1-2 on 13 days.
BUZZARD Resident. 9 on 26th March and 13 on 28th September.
BARN OWL Probably 2 pairs frequented the area.
TAWNY OWL Resident.
KINGFISHER Seen occasionally from January onwards with most sightings in the summer and autumn.
GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER Resident. 6 recorded on 16th March and 12th April.
GREEN WOODPECKER Still very scarce. Recorded on 15 occasions mostly towards the year end.

DARK-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE Highest count was 28 on 16th October.
PALE-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE Seen on 7 days including 6 on 19th September and 5 on 30th.
BARNACLE GOOSE 20 on 27th September, 31 south 1st October and 6 north on 2nd October.
WHOOPER SWAN Highest count following the coast was 87 south on 26th October.
SCAUP 2 north on 3rd November.
EIDER Highest count recorded was 29 north on 10th December.
VELVET SCOTER 1 north 27th July. Recorded on 4 days in September, 3 times in October and 6 dates in November including 3 north on 1st November, 4 north on 5th and 3 on 22nd. Final sighting on 9th December.
COMMON SCOTER Highest count for the year was 477 on 2nd October.
LONG-TAILED DUCK 2 south on 15th January, drake north 21st April. In November singles on 20th, 22nd and 24th. 4 north on 9th December.
GREY PARTRIDGE Recorded on several days at North Cliff with 8 on 8th October.
COOT An unusual sighting of 1 on the sea 12th November.
RED-NECKED GREBE In September singles north on 6th, 20th and 27th. 1 north 10th October. Singles 4th and 9th November. 1 north 3rd December.
AVOCET 5 south on 22nd August.
RINGED PLOVER The year’s biggest recorded passage was 157 (140 south) on 23rd August.
GREY PHALAROPE 1 north 19th November, 3 north the following day (GCT, DGH, JCL)
WOOD SANDPIPER 1 near Goxhill from 27th April to 1st May.
SPOTTED REDSHANK 1 on the beach 10th August.
PURPLE SANDPIPER 2 over wintered and were last recorded on 1st May. An autumn bird on 1st September to the year end.
LITTLE TERN Singles north 13th and 27th July, 1 south 10th September.
BLACK TERN 2 south 23rd August, 1 north 5th September, 1 north 6th September, 10 north 9th September, 10 again on 10th September.
ROSEATE TERN 3 south 1st September (GCT).
SABINE’S GULL All sightings in September: 2 adults north on the 1st, 2 adults north 5th, a juvenile north on 6th and 2 juveniles north together on the 19th (DGH, GCT, JCL et al).
ICELAND GULL 3cy on the seafront 19th May (MT). The same bird was seen on several previous days at Aldborough (AJ). Adult north on 20th November (DGH, JL).
CASPIAN GULL Several sightings of juveniles on the seafront August/September.
GREAT SKUA Recorded on 16 days. Highest counts was 7 on 1st September and 12 on 27th September.
POMARINE SKUA Recorded on 8 days, all In September. 2 south on 1st, 2 south 5th, 5 north 6th, 2 north 7th, singles on 10th, 12th, 17th and 27th.
ARCTIC SKUA Recorded on 37 seawatches. Highest counts were In September with 27 on 6th, 22 north on 7th and 37 on 12th.
LONG-TAILED SKUA First recorded on 29th August. In September 2 north on 5th, singles 6th, 7th, 12th and 18th. 1 on 2nd October.
LITTLE AUK In November 1 on 12th, 11 on 19th, 8 on 20th, 7 on 21st and 1 on 22nd. December sightings were 1 on 7th, 161 on 9th, 14 on 10th, singles on 14th and 20th.
BLACK GUILLEMOT 1 landed briefly on the sea before carrying on north on 12th September (GCT, DGH, JCL).
RED-THROATED DIVER Highest count was 141 on 26th February.
BLACK-THROATED DIVER 1 south 16th April, 1 landed on the sea 23rd September, 1 south 4th November.
GREAT NORTHERN DIVER Seen on 1st June and 3 days in each of July and September. 2 days in October and 8 dates in November with 4 on 20th of that month. In December singles on 3rd and 9th.
STORM PETREL 1 north 4th September (DGH, SW).
LEACH’S PETREL 2 north 5th September (DGH, GCT, SW, JCL), 1 north on 2nd October (DGH).
BLUE FULMAR 1 north on 6th September.
CORY’S SHEARWATER Outside the recording area at Ulrome, 1 flew north then U turned south on 3rd September (MRad)
GREAT SHEARWATER 1 flew north c250m offshore on 5th September (DGH).
SOOTY SHEARWATER Recorded on 14 days. First 2 on 2nd August. 60 north on 5th September. 152 north on 27th September. Final sighting of 1 on 9th December.
MANX SHEARWATER Highest count was 383 north on 5th September.
BALEARIC SHEARWATER 1 north 16th July (JCL, DRM, MRad)
OSPREY 1 flew south over Great Hatfield on 1st November.
LONG-EARED OWL 1 at Rolston 8th September (TI)
SHORT-EARED OWL Several sightings of up to 2 at Rolston during January and February. 1 flew north over the seafront on 14th April. 2 in off 4th November and 1 on 12th November. Singles at North Cliff 15th October and Rolston 20th November.
HOOPOE 1 at Long Beach caravan park from c18th to 28th September (finder unknown but seen by most of the local birders on 27th when it was photographed).
MERLIN Singles over the seafront 24th September and 19th October.
WAXWING In January 1 over North Cliff boat yard on 12th (JCooper) and 3 on the old railway line 16th (Je.S).
JAY 6 at North Cliff on 3rd October was notable away from the Mere.
WILLOW TIT 1 seen well and photographed at Atwick caravan park on 7th October, probably the first local sighting for several decades (JCooper)
YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER 2 North Cliff 24th September with at least 1 the following day. 1 Rolston 2nd-3rd October. 1 on the old railway line 7th October.
RING OUZEL 2 at North Cliff on 29th April with 1 remaining to 3rd May. 1 at North Cliff 17th November.
WHEATEAR 16 at North Cliff on 29th April.
PIED FLYCATCHER 2 seen north side of Hornsea on 2nd September.
TREE SPARROW Becoming scarcer in the area but still regular in the North Cliff area with 10 on 8th October. 5 South Cliffs on 7th February, 4 on the old Railway Line 10th February. Also recorded at Goxhill and Seaton.
